Carla collapsed to the floor, instinctively curling her body to protect her belly. Blood appeared on her lip. Her ears rang.

No one rushed to help her.

Instead, laughter filled the room.

Doña Imelda, Miguel’s mother, raised her glass. “That’s what happens when you marry someone without class. At least she’s pretty. Otherwise, we’d have sent her back where she came from.”

Governor Arturo waved dismissively. “Leave her. A wife should learn discipline.”

Miguel spat near her feet. “Clean it. You’re embarrassing this family.”

Carla looked up at him, trembling. She searched his face for mercy. She found none.

Slowly, she reached into her pocket and took out her phone.

Miguel laughed. “Who are you texting? Your poor parents?”

Carla didn’t reply.

She typed one message to a contact saved with no name:

Dad. You were right. I chose wrong. Come get me. End this.

She pressed send.
