How to make a sansevieria bloom and enjoy its fragrance for longer

We think of it as almost indestructible, a little quiet in its corner, always faithfully waiting even when we forget to water it. And yet, the sansevieria hides an unsuspected talent: it can offer a delicate, sometimes fragrant bloom that surprises even the most passionate plant lovers. Why do some succeed and others never do? Is it a matter of luck, age, or small daily actions that we unknowingly neglect? Before unveiling this botanical mystery, let's delve into the ideal conditions to encourage it to reveal its beauty and achieve a successful sansevieria bloom.

Providing the right light without skipping steps

The snake plant (Sansevieria) tolerates almost anything, but it becomes more demanding when it comes to flowering. The key is indirect light. Too much shade, and it will survive without ever producing flowers; too much direct sunlight, and its leaves may become scorched. The ideal spot? A bright room, near an east- or west-facing window, where the light remains soft, like a spring morning.

Watering just the right amount, no more, no less

This is often where everything hinges. Overwatering is the most common and damaging mistake. This plant stores water in its leaves: there's no need to drown it. Always wait until the soil is completely dry a few centimeters down before watering again. In winter, reduce watering even further: the plant enters a period of dormancy, a bit like us under a blanket.

Opt for a well-drained substrate

Inappropriate soil can prevent any attempt at flowering. To give your plant the best chance, choose a light and airy mix. A succulent potting mix, enriched with coarse sand and a little perlite, allows the roots to breathe. The result: a more balanced, more vigorous plant, and therefore more likely to flower for an extended period.

Feed the plant… sparingly

A little boost can make all the difference. A special liquid fertilizer for succulents, applied every two months in spring and summer, is more than enough. There's no need to overdo it: too many nutrients weaken the plant instead of stimulating it, like an overly rich dessert after a large meal.

Stable temperature and serene atmosphere

Sansevieria thrives in a temperate atmosphere, between 18 and 30°C. It dislikes cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, which can inhibit flowering. The good news is that the dry air in our homes suits it perfectly, without requiring any special care.

The little stress that changes everything

Paradoxically, mild stress can trigger flowering. In winter, reduce watering and stop fertilizing. This pause mimics its natural environment and prepares the plant for the surprise of the following spring, when the first flower stalks may appear.

To prolong the delicate fragrance of the flowers

When the magic happens, the small white flowers often release a subtle fragrance, especially in the evening. To enjoy it longer, avoid moving the plant, clean its leaves regularly, and maintain a stable temperature. Simple touches like making a freshly cut bouquet last and enjoying a  natural indoor fragrance prolong the pleasure .

After flowering, we gently support the plant

Once the flowers have faded, gently remove them and then resume your normal care routine. This allows the plant to replenish its reserves, an essential condition before any future flowering.

With a little observation, patience and these well-targeted gestures, the sansevieria proves that it is not only robust, but also capable of delicate floral attentions.
